In 1937, Amelia Earhart once again attempted to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate across the globe accompanied by flight navigator, Fred Noonan. They planned to fly across the Atlantic, to Africa, then east to India and finally to South East Asia. On June 29th, the pair arrived at Lae situated in Papua New Guinea. A few days later, on July 2nd the pair would be last seen departing Lae in hopes of making their way to Howland Island for a fuel refill. That was the last time the pair was seen alive as they never made it to Howland Island.
After the disappearance of Earhart and Noonan, news quickly spread and a huge search and rescue mission was launched. However, two weeks after their disappearance, the search was called off and it was concluded that the pair were most likely dead or lost at sea. Three years later, 350 miles away from Howland Island, a British scientist arrived on a deserted Island named Nicomoruru. There, he and his crew made a horrifying discovery. They had found an incomplete skeleton next to the remains of a campfire. The bones of the skeleton were smashed and scattered all over the beach of the island. Rumours quickly spread that the bones belonged to either Earhart or Noonan. The bones were sent to 2 doctors in Fiji where it was concluded that the bones didn’t belong to either of the two.
Fast forward to 2017, a forensic anthropologist decided to re-examine the bones and their measurements. After comparing measurements to Earhart’s, the 2 had an almost identical match. A group of scientists decide to head back to Nicomoruru island to see if more evidence could be found suggesting that these bones belonged to Amelia Earhart. Near where the bones were found, scientists found further evidence such as a freckles cream bottle which was speculated to have been Amelia’s.
Theories speculate that Earhart and Noonan crashed into Nicomoruru island where Noonan dies instantly on impact while Earhart drags her bloodied body onto the beaches of the island. Nikomoruru island was and still is uninhabited by humans, however, the island is inhabited by thousands of underground creatures known as coconut crabs. At some point, Earhart's wounds most likely attracted the coconut crabs one night which then swarmed her and fed on her.
