With the dawn of a new year, leadership responsibilities have been passed onto a new group of students, dedicated to the betterment of the school.
Under Head Prefects Eric Wang and Molly Worthington’s lead, the KGV prefect team consists of four departments - student learning, student wellbeing, community engagement and social responsibility. Our Head Journalist Ayesha spoke with these departments to get to know their respective roles.
Student Learning - Krish Gupta, Tanya Sachanandani, Katherine Yan, Jack Xiang
Q: What is your role and how do you plan to help students through your role?
A: Our role is to ensure students are able to reach their academic potential in KGV’s learning environment. We plan to ask our students for feedback on their learning and take action based on their views.
Q: What long term plans do you have?
A: In the long term we hope to collect student feedback on individual classes to develop classroom dynamics. We are planning to work with the careers and guidance office to provide more information on higher education and life after KGV.
Q: Are there any immediate plans?
A: Our ongoing plans include making improvements to the assessment calendar and assessment notifications given to students. We are also working on expanding the opportunities given to students to assist one another.
Q: How do you aim to help students through your plans?
A: We aim to increase student-student and teacher-student support in our community to optimise student learning across KGV.
Student Wellbeing - Kashish Keswani, Barbara Lai, Yashvi Sadarangani, Chloe Wan
Q: What is your role and how do you plan to help students through your role?
A: As Wellbeing Prefects for the year of 2022-2023, we aim to raise awareness about the various aspects of wellbeing, de-stigmatise mental health issues, introduce coping mechanisms to our community and make known the resources already available at our school. We strive to create an accessible team, including ourselves, involved staff and Wellbeing Ambassadors, to support members of our school whenever desired.
Q: What long term plans do you have?
A: Our prospective plans for the team are to formulate workshops during PSHE lessons, introduce strategies to cope with stress, and organise activities to promote an active lifestyle. Parallel to the current increasing importance devoted to wellbeing, we wish to inform young people about potential struggles around this area and how to prevent, rather than later deal with, these issues where possible. As a new aim this year, we also want to devise methods of aiding staff wellbeing.
Q: Are there any immediate plans?
A: We are currently in the process of recruiting a team of Wellbeing Ambassadors; we hope to integrate their roles with our own, forming a sturdy support system to represent the provision of wellbeing at KGV. The team is also assembling a video as an overview of wellbeing at our school, aiming to remain transparent about our goals and KGV’s available resources.
Q: How do you aim to help students through your plans?
A: By educating students about the everlasting impact of wellbeing on other aspects of one’s life, we strive to inspire the implementation of healthy lifestyles at a young age. Sustaining both physical and mental wellbeing can become habitual, therefore enhancing students to perform to their maximum capabilities in other areas at school, and outside of school. We additionally want to raise awareness about helping others; knowledge about peer support is crucial to maintain a happy community.
Community Engagement - Vidhi Asarpota, John Chan, Mudita Jain, Pak Liu
Q: What is your role and how do you plan to help students through your role?
As community engagement prefects, it is our role to aid with the communication between the different roles of the school. We are responsible for organising and participating in marquee events, collaborating with KGV Alliance, and aiding with new parent tours. We are further responsible for helping enhance student and teacher relations, and collaborating with other schools, including our feeder schools and JCSRS.
Q: What long term plans do you have?
Through our projects and plans, we hope to help KGV create a more inclusive environment, where all members feel welcomed and a sense of belonging. Furthermore, we hope to connect KGV with the wider community, and help students engage in outside activities to create more positive social change.
Q: Are there any immediate plans?
As for our current plans, we aim to increase the amount of alumni talks held from a variety of subjects, and facilitate a creation of a student newsletter, yet some of our more ambitious projects may be postponed due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, such a potential NGO enterprise and a buddy reading program with both KJS and JCSRS.
Q: How do you aim to help students through your plans?
As a team, we aim to create a greater sense of community amongst the school population, which includes the students, teachers, parents, and alumni. We also aim to help engage the KGV population with the wider Hong Kong community, whether it be with other schools or charitable organizations.
Social Responsibility: Krish Jain, Joyce Liang, Satvi Modi, Joanne Yau
Q: What is your role and how do you plan to help students through your role?
Krish: My role as a social responsibility prefect is to uphold the school’s social reputation and help the school be socially acceptable to students, parents, teachers, and the wider community.
Our vision would be to reduce the carbon footprint of our school through increasing renewable energy usage, as well as enhancing the recycling system. Our plans will help the students in providing them with opportunities to help the environment and understand the need to reduce energy consumption. Our short term plans would include developing awareness in students of what the school is currently doing and how they can help out.
These are the pillars of the student body, supporting you throughout 2022. They are appointed to optimise your school life, so feel free to direct your concerns to their capable hands.
